The Chinese Crested Dog has always been a companion dog appreciated for its peculiar appearance and its very small size, since the times of the Han Dynasty.

Origin of the Chinese Crested Dog

The Chinese Crested Dog is a very elegant dog and differs in two particular categories, the hairless and the haired.

The two species of dog were divided into different breeds, until it was realized that both types of dogs could be born in the same litter.

Like other dog breeds, the history of the Chinese Crested Dog is little known.

It is known that these dogs already existed in 1200 in China and that they were traditionally used to catch rats on merchant ships.

Later, however, they are believed to have belonged to Chinese noble families, where they worked as guardians of the house’s treasures.

It was at the beginning of the 19th century that this small and affectionate dog also became popular in Europe thanks to Ida Garrett who, in love with this breed, took the decision to promote this pretty face all over the world.

Characteristics of the Chinese Crested Dog

The Chinese Crested Dog is a small breed of dog, as some examples of the dog are extremely small.

At the withers it can reach a height that varies between 15 and 35 cm for an ideal weight between 3 and 6 kg.

But we must remember that there are exceptions, as some specimens can reach the incredible weight of 10 kg.

These characteristics, both weight and dimensions, are in accordance with their ancestry.

The Chinese Crested Dog has details unique to its species, such as its coat, which differs into two types.

The first variety of Crested Dog has hair only on the head, the body being hairless except on the head, tail and feet, and the skin is smooth, soft and warm to the touch.

In addition, the hair forms a long tuft on the head, which is one of the characteristics of this breed.

In addition to the strictly hairless variety, there is a shaggy variety of the Chinese Crested Dog, whose coat is covered with a soft veil of long hair that extends over the entire body.

The dog’s coat has a wide range of colors that includes light gray, black and white shading.

The eyes give him a playful and affectionate look.

Personality of the Chinese Crested Dog

The Chinese Crested Dog is an alert, affectionate, cheerful and playful dog.

This small dog is ideal for living with the whole family, because it adapts to any environment.

Despite being small, it has a docile personality and likes to be the center of attention.

Being very affectionate, he socializes easily with other breeds, so he tends to suffer if he spends a lot of time alone at home.

In fact, this dog breed is not ideal for anyone who spends a lot of time outside.

In addition, he is very obedient and protective of children, so if properly educated, he is an excellent companion, even for families with elderly people or children.

care

Chinese Crested dogs, in contrast to other dog breeds, require special attention to their health.

To maintain your dog’s physical appearance, you need to be aware of the needs of each species, with and without fur.

Hairless species do not need to be brushed, and it is advisable to bathe only when the dog is dirty and needs a bath.

The long-haired species, on the other hand, needs to be brushed once or twice a week to eliminate loose hair or possible formation of knots.

Our adorable friend has a medium energy level, so he loves to walk around and play, but not too intensely.

It is advisable to take him to do some physical activity outdoors. to help you socialize.

However, we must not forget that the hairless dog species can suffer skin damage from too much sun.

That’s why you shouldn’t walk the dog at times when the sun is too hot.
