Also known as the Pomeranian, German spitz dogs have become very famous and beloved for their appearance, which is described by many as a walking teddy bear.
That’s because their coat is enviable and their personality leaves anyone enchanted: they are extremely affectionate, friendly and cheerful, being able to turn any environment into a real party.
Being one of the most popular breeds. if you still don’t know about the origins of the German spitz and want to know more about the breed, follow the guide we’ve prepared below!
The origin of the race
Although it is believed that the breed originated in Germany – hence the name German spitz – the true origin of its appearance is not known for sure.
Some specialists estimate that hundreds of years ago this little animal already lived in European territories and has its ancestry coming from the big sled dogs.
However, you must be wondering why the breed is so small. There are actually 5 types of dog in the German Spitz lineage, the Pomeranian being the smallest of them.
Basically, they are classified as: the dwarf, the small, the medium, the large and the giant.
Although considered small, the miniature is only in stature: with a huge heart full of love to give to their tutors, the spitz dogs are also great in terms of elegance and charm.
Main characteristics of the Pomeranian
With an average weight of only 4 kilos and 22 cm in height, the German spitz is a dog completely adaptable to almost any environment.
coat
The breed has a huge variety of colors, and it is possible to find dogs with shades ranging from the darkest coat – black – to the whitest tone you can imagine.
Also, some vets claim that their coat can change as the dog ages, for example a lulu that grew up with brown hair can easily become more orange over time.
With straight and straight hair, its coat is long on the body and short and narrow on the face, with clipping being the most suitable method for the breed.
Personalities of the German Spitz
Anyone who has – or is thinking of having – a Pomeranian breed dog should know that they will never be alone. That’s because this little animal is very companionable and always likes to be next to its tutors.
Confident and protective, there are almost no dangers that scare him and some say he is capable of being one of the best guard dogs in existence.
Its frantic bark manages to alert its owners of any danger that surrounds them, leaving it aware of everything that happens around it.
With a lot of personality and joy, it is practically impossible to be with these dogs and not interact with them. Very agitated and playful, you will hardly see them sad or down in the corner.
Very intelligent and agile, they are one of the pets that adapt best to teaching and can easily obey the commands of their tutors.
Although they get along well with children and adults, being great family dogs, German spitz are very suspicious when it comes to unknown people, which can trigger frequent barking until he gets used to the person.
Special care for the breed
For the Pomeranian to grow and develop happily and healthy, it is necessary to adopt a series of special cares in order to guarantee that he has a good life:
hair brushing
As it has a special coat, to keep it always beautiful and aligned, it is recommended that it be brushed at least twice a week with a suitable brush.
Bath
Although they have fuller hair, German spitz do not need frequent baths and ideally they should be given as the owner deems necessary.
Nails
Because he is a very playful dog, it is recommended that his nails be trimmed frequently to prevent him from getting hurt during his adventures.
Oral hygiene
Like other breeds, it is necessary to brush the dog’s teeth at least once a week and, if possible, this hygiene can be done daily.
Mental health
Being an active dog, the ideal thing is for tutors to offer interactive toys that stimulate the animal’s intelligence. This is because although they like to play, they can get bored easily, making it necessary to always renew their distractions.
In addition, it is important to reserve at least one period of the day to dedicate yourself to games or even moments of affection between the animal and the guardian, so that he does not feel alone.
